…..As an essayist, art critic, curator, pedagogue, lecturer, creator of objects, actions or musical compositions, Camnitzer focuses on the transforming capacity of art, which he considers to be essentially a product of reflection. His practice, whether artistic, essayistic or pedagogical, is characterized by addressing controversial issues of our time, such as criticism of art-merchandise, the demystification and obsolescence of the role of the artist in consumer society, the strategies that power uses to impose their logic and perpetuate their dominance, or to the capacity of neoliberal societies to turn education into a propagandistic and therefore irrelevant instrument, all through the signifying function of language, its ambiguities and arbitrariness, and the evocative power of the images. With these tools, Camnitzer seeks to awaken active participation and involvement in the artistic process in the viewer….

Born in Lübeck (Germany) and raised in Uruguay, Luis Camnitzer has settled in New York since the 1960s, where he carries out his artistic, essay and teaching work - he is currently an emeritus professor at the State University of New York. He considers himself an exiled Latin American artist in the capital of contemporary art and is undoubtedly a key figure in the development of 20th century conceptualism.
