Based in various places at the same time (Sweden, Costa Rica, Norway, Santiago de Compostela or Montevideo) and with long and regular stays in various countries. Capelán belongs to what has been called "post-conceptual artists" who work with structures of ideas, always insisting on the material and formal diversity of their proposals. His work operates from the language of representation and tends to allude to category systems and identity issues, be they cultural, social or even the identity of the artist himself and his art. His fields of operations, in addition to his personal work, are pedagogy, curatorships, and texts of various kinds. Capelan has participated, among others, in the biennials of Kwang-ju (Korea), Johannesburg (South Africa), Site Santa Fe (USA), Auckland (New Zealand), Sao Paulo and MERCOSUR (Brazil), Photography Biennial of Berlin (Germany), Mud Biennial (Venezuela), Paiz Biennial of Guatemala, Venice (Italy). He has obtained the prize of the III Biennial of Havana and the Guggenheim scholarship among other distinctions. Professor at the Bergen Academy of Art and visiting professor or artist-in-residence at the Universities of Peking, Auckland (New Zealand), National University of Colombia, Umea and Gothenburg (Sweden).
